Underwater Photo
from AllUnderwater imaging is considered an especially challenging area of photography, since it requires very specialized equipment and techniques to be successful. Despite these challenges, it offers the possibility of many exciting and rare photographic opportunities. Animals such as fish and marine mammals are the most common subjects, but photographers also pursue shipwrecks, submerged cave systems, underwater "landscapes", and portraits of fellow divers. The primary obstacle faced by underwater photographers is the extreme loss of color and contrast when submerged to any significant depth. The longer wavelengths of sunlight (such as red or orange) are absorbed quickly by the surrounding water, so even to the naked eye everything appears blue-green in color. The loss of color not only increases vertically through the water column, but also horizontally, so subjects further away from the camera will also appear colorless and indistinct. This effect is true even in apparently clear water, such as that found around tropical coral reefs. Wide-angle shot of coral reef in East Timor Underwater photographers solve this problem by combining two techniques. The first is to get the camera as close to the photographic subject as possible, minimizing the horizontal loss of color. This is best achieved by using wide-angle lenses, which allow very close focus, or macro lenses, where the subject is often only inches away from the camera. In practical terms, serious underwater photographers consider any more than about 3 ft/1 m of water between camera and subject to be unacceptable. The second technique is the use of flash to restore any color lost vertically through the water column. Fill-flash, used effectively, will "paint" in any missing colors by providing full-spectrum visible light to the overall exposure. Since underwater photography is often performed while scuba diving, it is important that the diver-photographer be sufficiently skilled so that it remains a reasonably safe activity. Good scuba technique also has an impact on the quality of images, since marine life is less likely to be scared away by a calm diver, and the environment is less likely to be damaged or disturbed. There is the possibility of encountering poor conditions, such as heavy currents, tidal flow, or poor visibility. Generally, underwater photographers try to avoid these situations whenever possible. |

Even the preview screen is pretty clear through the housing, so you know exactly what your pictures will look like. The camera must be taken out of the housing to get decent pictures out of water, otherwise they are usually fuzzy and may have water spots. It is quick and easy in and out. I have taken some pictures with it: medium shots, distance shots, flash pictures, and with and without the waterproof casing. The pictures are blurry messes and absolutely useless. Unless I just happened to get a defective unit--as there is one review here, intelligently written, and positive--I would say steer clear of this camera. As far as sending it to get repaired, there is a $10 fee even under warrantee. Buyer beware.UPDATE: I was sent a new camera. This one works. I used it Disney's Typhoon Lagoon shark swim. It was a little tricky to use underwater, especially because the picture taking feedback is iffy, since there is on LCD screen. However, on my second snorkel through the lagoon, I did get a few decent pictures. Remember, this is basically a cheapo camera with a waterproof housing. For the price, it works nicely. Just don't expect top quality. Customer Review: Disappointing results I bought this camera for a snorkeling trip in the Philippines. The only note is a comment someone else had left: It's recording in high def, so every head movement is incredible rapid. Makre sure you move your head VERY slowly when filming with video, or else you'll get a headache when watching the playback. IT also records quite well above water - it reminds me of a 16mm old time camera, they way it looks. Customer Review: Good video camera. Poor still camera Good, sturdy camera. Was able to shoot decent video clips. I using it with attached light. However, still images are very bad quality - average exposure time is 1/2 - 1/4 secs, so images are blurry. I wish manufacturer would set limit for still picture exposure time to 1/8 or 1/16 secs. As is, still mode almost useless and could be used only in very bright settings. |

I used this product for a swim team photo shoot, taking several pictures of each swimmer underwater. I tested it first, and it was okay, then I shot around 60 kids in about 2 hours on the second use. I found several problems with this product and will like be returning the product. The worst of the problems was leakage. When I opened the case after about an hour of consistent use, going in and out of the water, I found a significant amount of water in the basin of the camera housing. It did get my camera and lens wet, but thankfully did not do any harm to my camera. Furthermore, it was nearly impossible to consistently line up the viewfinder with the clear plastic on the back side of the case. Unless you have Live View through your LCD screen, it is painful to see what you are shooting. I also felt the deign of the housing was poor in terms of my ability to press the trigger of my Digital Rebel XTi. Due to long reach and awkward angle to reach the trigger button from the finger hole, I opted to not use the designed finger hole and just squeeze down on the normal plastic. Additionally I used a 82 mm fixed 20mm lens and it was too big for the lens area. Lastly any water or fog on the glass of the housing caused my photos to be really blurry or just bad. The software was tricky to upload to my laptop ... took about an hour to figure out but don't let that scare you, I'm not the biggest tech person. Flip the switch to the left not right when uploading. I'm truely happy with the results! Customer Review: Good camera for the price The lack of zoom is a little disappointing. It's difficult to see what you're taking a picture of, underwater. It's hard to hold the camera steady while snorkeling in currents, or diving down. I put it to the test during a Caribbean cruise where I snorkeled 3 times and took hundreds of photos underwater. In the same trip my wife used her Intova dive camera to take pictures during a scuba diving and 2 snorkeling trips. Here are the summary of my experience: The housing did not leak so I was able to take photos at a much faster rate than the Intova point and shoot camera. Still it is a rather expensive plastic housing. Its useful lifetime will depend on how long the plastic will not become brittle. My biggest problem was using the viewfinder. With my snorkeling mask it is difficult to look into the viewfinder to see what I am focusing on. One way to avoid this problem would be to get a newer Nikon with live-view in addition to a viewfinder. To get as much into the photo as possible I used a wide angle lens. However, it was difficult to zoom the lens in and out since it is difficult to rotate the lens.My wife's Intova did not have this problem and can change the zoom easily. Another problem I encounter is using the built-in popup flash. It is difficult to keep the flash pop up. Without the flash I have to rely on the sun and also cannot take photo of objects more than 10 feet below the sea level. Again my wife's Intova with the built-in flash did better than me. Overall, the underwater housing was cheaper than a new Intova camera and housing. It allows me to take advantage of the faster recycling time of a digital SLR. My best pictures are better than those taken with the Intova. But my percentage of good pictures are much lower than those of the Intova. It need a few improvements for this housing to maximize the advantage of a SLR over a point-and-shoot for underwater photography.. Customer Review: A decent option for the occassional underwater photographer I'll start the review by discussing the seller, as this item was not ship/sold from Amazon but instead 47th street photo. While the order took a day or two longer than Amazon itself usually requires all told from order to delivery was a little over a week. The product arrived in perfect condition so no complaints regarding the seller. In terms of the product, it's important to set realistic expectations for what you can do with it. 1. Take it underwater. Clearly this is the most important aspect of this product and I found that my camera was safe and secure for up to 20 feet underwater (the farthest I went) without any issues of leakage. 2. Fit. I have a Nikon D60 and used my standard 18-55mm lens to get the largest area for my shots. As a result the front of the case was not snug to the lens requiring I told it firm, or shots were nearly impossible to take. In the future I may use a longer lens or other means to fix this issue. 3. Picture control. In short, you need to set the camera on auto with a decently high ISO to get this to work. Between the plastic on the case, the finger controls only being adequate, and the difficulty of seeing the LCD underwater you cannot change settings on the fly. Not sure you'd need to, but something to make note of. 4. Focus. I had a really difficult time with getting my camera to focus. This could have been the result of somewhat murky water or the lens not butting up against the end of the case but for every 5 shots I tried to take I only got one or two. This was a bit frustrating to get out of the water and only discover you got 10 pictures and not 40 or so to choose from. 5. Air. The only other issue I encounter was getting enough air out of the bag. Because air was trapped it made it a little more challenging to work with under the water. Not impossible mind you, but a little difficult. I'm sure over time I will get better at using the case and it does what it is meant to do - protect the camera from water. So if you're looking to get some pics underwater this is a good option but it shouldn't be confused with more expensive hard cases which will provide much more control over the settings and an overall more pleasurable experience. Still for $90 (on sale) I think it is a good interim step before buying a hard case or for the occasional underwater photographer. |

We bought this hoping we would capture a few good shots...over 400 shots and movies at depths of 70 feet. This housing is very easy and simple to use. My only suggestions are...get a red filter (everything looks blue the deeper you go), and use the little silica bags to stop fogging. Sometimes the lens area would fog due to battery heat. Simple fix. This is a must have for underwater photos. A GREAT BUY. Customer Review: too big and cumbersom I ended up sending this back. The picture didn't do the article justice. The housing is HUGE!!!! Imagine your camera with the lens completely extended. Well, that's how large the housing is. It stays that way (at least the camera retracts back). I have one of these underwater housing for my little canon elf and I thought it would be great to get this for my G9. But this is WAY WAY too big. Customer Review: Nothing good to say, sorry Bought this camera on a whim just before a trip to the Caribbean where we would do a lot of snorkeling. It comes with a tiny getting started guide which tells you to get full instructions on their web site. Can't do that from a boat, and unfortunately the buttons and operations are not at all intuitive. Even worse however, is that the camera failed after 20 pictures. Water did not leak in, but it stopped showing images on the screen, stopped taking pictures, and oddly, wouldn't turn off. The screen glowed a dull blank glow with no image, menu items or instructions. I had to pull the batteries to shut it off, and when I put them back in I got teh same dull glow. New batteries did nothing. I was able to download the pictures and a few were OK. I think with more practice it would be adequate and fun for simple underwater pictures - if it only worked. The packaging said not to return to the seller, but to call Vivitar directly for support. Haven't done that yet but I rather have my money back than to keep this poor device. Customer Review: Totally inadequate for advertised use. I received it yesterday and was surprised at the weight. It's larger and heavier than a regular digital camera, but I guess that's to be expected. However, what I did not like is the long 'lag time' in taking photos. I'm talking about maybe 5 seconds here between pushing the button and the actual picture capture. For a camera designed for sports and nature action, that seems an unacceptably long time. This may be good if one is setting up for a still shot in a damp condition, but for use in a white-water rafting trip or canoeing, this is a 'deal breaker'. I never could get the 'burst' feature to engage. The second drawback is that while it is advertised as a 'waterproof' camera, the packaging boasts 'water resistant'. NOT the same thing. Third: totally inadequate for night shots. When using the flash, the recharge time is about the same as the shutter speed -- about three to five seconds. During that time, the screen goes blank, and the flash ready light (a blue light on the left of the screen) flashes. The flash is only good for about two feet. Everything else is in darkness. There is no scene setting for night or low light photography. I would not recommend this to anyone seeking a camera for outdoor, water related action photography. And this is a Vivitar, a leading name in cameras! They should recall and re-work their design on this model. |

On the 8th day, I noticed some drops of water on the inside of the case during a dive. I brought it up and took it straight to the dive table to dry and open it. I found 4 drops of water on the inside and a fine mist. I thoroughly dried and cleaned it and put it in a tank of water without the camera and found that it again had a few drops of water inside. So I discontinued the use during the rest of my dive trip. I got home today and called Canon and was told there is no warranty. They did finally tell me to mail it in to them and they would take a look at it, but may not be able to do anything about it. They also told me that no one has ever had a problem with this case, but as I looked on this page, I noticed there are others with problems and they have also called them in. So my faith in Canon products went downhill quickly. I had never had a Canon but after many recommendations decided to try this product and may truly regret it now. |

Customer Review: Great addition to the Flip This little case is a great addition to the Flip video camera. It's easy to use, dependable and fun. I bought it for videoing my 1 year old's swim lessons but have enjoyed using it anywhere I'm nervous about my Flip getting damaged - boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, playing in the sprinklers. The only downside is that you have to remove the wrist cord on the flip before it fits in the case. Minor but inconvenient. Customer Review: It works relatively well, but I've got my reservations For the price, you can't really beat this. It's got decent construction, and works relatively well in shallow water. My only reservations were that that when I'd put it under water, I'd see air bubbles coming from the case. Now when I see air escaping, I tend to imagine water entering. Whenever I removed the camera from the case, I never actually saw any leaks or any water on the unit, but it just makes me question the long term viability of such a case, which is why I returned the unit. Also, this is something that probably can't be helped, but I wish that the mic would work better above surface. Obviously that's probably not possible due to the fact you have to keep everything out, including sound, so I didn't dock stars for that, but I wish you could record audio better. Bottom line: for the price it works pretty well, I'm just concerned about the long term viability of such a case, and there's a pretty high price to pay if there are such doubts. |

Customer Review: Good case, just a bit expensive and bulky I purchased this case for my 3 year old w55 cybershot about a month ago. My friend has another ikelite for his canon and the case is pretty nice so I went with one as well. The construction seems to be really strong, the plastic feels like you could never break it. The hardware seems pretty rugged as well and I like the lever for the shutter button. Over all it seems like a really nice case and I needed something sturdy as I frequent 30m on wreck dives. I rated 4 stars for two reasons. First the case is pretty expensive, it cost 50% more than I paid for the camera. I know these cases are bucky though and its just part of the deal with dive cameras. Secondly the case is positively buoyant, this can be a bit annoying. I was hoping for neutral buoyancy. Other than that, its a great case. |

Aquapac Desicant Sachets  Absorb moisture in humid conditions. Recommended for use in all Aquapac cases. In humid climates, moisture in the air inside the case can condense into water droplets. A sachet of desiccant will absorb any such moisture, keeping the contents completely dry. This desiccant indicates when no longer useable by changing colour. We strongly suggest its use with all Aquapac cases. Desiccant sachets are highly absorbent and environmentally-friendly. Customer Review: worthless I did not realize I was paying for something I could get for free other places. Customer Review: Dried out my iPod My iPod Shuffle (2nd generation) occasionally gets damp when I listen to it while running. After a while, the device started acting up (playback would stop even though no buttons were pressed). I suspected moisture might be the problem, and thought exposure to desicants just might help out. Sure enough, after receiving these desicant sachets and sealing the iPod in a small plastic bag with them, the problem went away. Still, the problem recurs now and then, but each time seems to go away after exposure to these desicants. So a small investment appears to be allowing me to squeeze more life out of a more expensive product. |

I went to 40 feet (deepest) with my strobe, and yes, the strobe was needed for some pictures (I have an awesome one of a crab under some rocks, which wouldn't have been possible without the strobe). Customer Review: Good camera for the price I used this camera during a recent trip to Hawaii. I must have taken it on 5 snorkel trips. The battery did great and the camera is 100% waterproof (even at good depths). The biggest issues are photo clarity (which I think is difficult for most cameras underwater) and length of time to get the shot. The shutter is very slow. You probably need to hold it down for a good 2-3 seconds in order to get the shot and by then the shots are usually long gone. For example, we were watching dolphins doing tricks coming out of the water. I must have taken 100 shots and none of them came out because the dolphin had already gone back under. However, I still loved having the camera and would say it was great for the money. You can also color correct a lot of the photos on a photo site (like Snapfish) so they are a lot crisper. If I had to do it over again, I would buy the same camera despite its few flaws. Customer Review: Sweet little deal SO far the cam works great. It is tiny and yet produces some sweet pictures--very good quality. I am a little apprehensive about testing its water tight capabilities, but seems air tight. |

Easy to bring to underwater. No leak at all. Some pictures got a black ring, but those areas can be easily cropped by image post-process. However, on the 4th use, when I was on the Wailua river kayaking tour, the part that attached to the string just fell. I was lucky that I noticed when it happened, otherwise I would have lost my camera along with all the pictures. Customer Review: POOR FIT I purchased this case for a snorkel tour. I'm glad I tried it at home first! I have a Canon SD850 IS. The case obstructed the lens from opening. I tried it multiple times, and got an error message on my camera because the lens could not properly open. As recommended I inserted the extender, which did nothing. Customer Review: Worked Great for Snorkeling & Beach I purchased the DiCAPac 310 to use with my Canon SD850is. I used the product on the beach and on three different snorkeling trips while on a Western Caribbean Cruise. Before leaving home, I tested the pack in the kitchen sink with a paper towel inside to start with, rather than my camera. Worked great, so tested with the camera. I always triple checked the ziplock type seal and the velcro seals before each use. Never had a drop of water inside! The side dial on my camera was difficult to switch once in the pack, so I usually left it on automatic, although I did change to video mode a couple of times. As some people stated, if not holding the camera just right, there were about 3 shots of my 75-100 that had a black ring on. Just getting used to it helped a lot. Zooming was a little difficult at first, but got easier the more experienced I became. The directions that come with the DiCAPac aren't the clearest, but I figured them out. I didn't need the extender ring (that is supplied) for use with my camera. Someone else on one of our snorkel excursions commented that they wished they had gotten a pack like ours as theirs didn't have a dedicated spot for the lens to zoom out, so he was having trouble with that on his flat bag. For $25 this was a great product for what I wanted it for. I never went down more than 8-10 feet, so well within the suggested safe range. I would highly recommend this product. Just always double or triple check your seals before jumping in. Customer Review: The case seems fine BUT the User Manual ... I have not gotten the case wet yet so I can not speak about the handiness or picture quality or waterproofness of the case. I can see that the picture can have a black ring if the camera is not resonable centered, since there is nothing to keep the camera centered this will have to be watched. The "Directions and Cautions" take me back 30 or 40 years when instructions for any item made in Japan or China were allways a hoot and barely comprehesible. I get the gerneral jest of the instructions but there are a few missing details: What is the "UP-RING" for and how does one use it? The instructions start with: "notes) This Product desires that stick out of lens uses electively to only long some didgital camera that Dicapac hard packing lenght." Please if any one can decifer this I sure would like to know what it says and if I need to use the "UP-RING". How does one use the lanyard, it is totally un-intuitive. I am a very mechinical kind of guy and I haven't the slightest I dear how to hitch up the lanyard to the case. It does appear to be rather short so I will probable use a old landyard with a clip. Well I am heading for a Caribean cruise and some snorkelling hope fully I will get some great phots. |

Bought an underwater Canon D10 digital camera for a trip to Puerto Rico. Saw the Zeikos floating strap and thought it made sense considering the value of the camera and the depth of the water. Attached the strap to the camera and was holding it by the orange float when the camera detached from the strap and hit the tile floor! Broke the strap mount on the camera but it still worked fortunately. After examining the strap to find out what happened, found that they tie a small knot in the rope and pass it thru a plastic cap with a small hole in it. The small knot was small enough to pass thru the plastic hole and whammmo. Cheap design. After passing the rope around the strap and avoiding the plastic piece, it worked OK. I guess you get what you pay for but I never expected the design to be that bad. It took very little effort to pull the strap apart. In fact, it was only the weight of the camera that did it! Customer Review: Great for floating a camera! We have the Canon under water camera (blue, kinda bulky). This strap will cause the camera to float in a pool or in the ocean. We dropped it above the water, threw it across the water, threw it into the water, and let go from several feet under the water, and the camera floated! This strap stayed on the camera without a problem - we used the little tie loop and tied it to the camera. The strap worked perfectly and we felt at ease taking the camera in the water. The orange color was also bright and easy to find. |

The "art" of photography is learned through doing and talent development. Books can only do so much and this one's way to expensive for what's offered. The photography is pretty good. The quality of the printing is not. I have seen much better reproduction and print quality in other photography and diving publications that cost a third of this book's price. Many of the images are dark and flat. And that's probably not the fault of the photographer or their original images. It's poor print quality. The few pertinent points that are discussed about the underwater photography methods and processes are helpful. But, anyone who would spend good money on expensive DSLRs, housings and underwater strobes is probably going to be pretty careful about who else handles them and how. For beginning photographers, and/or those new to diving who want something to help them get into this activity further, this may be a book for you. Experienced photographers/divers may not find this book a worthy choice, as I have discovered. |

I used this product for a swim team photo shoot, taking several pictures of each swimmer underwater. I tested it first, and it was okay, then I shot around 60 kids in about 2 hours on the second use. I found several problems with this product and will like be returning the product. The worst of the problems was leakage. When I opened the case after about an hour of consistent use, going in and out of the water, I found a significant amount of water in the basin of the camera housing. It did get my camera and lens wet, but thankfully did not do any harm to my camera. Furthermore, it was nearly impossible to consistently line up the viewfinder with the clear plastic on the back side of the case. Unless you have Live View through your LCD screen, it is painful to see what you are shooting. I also felt the deign of the housing was poor in terms of my ability to press the trigger of my Digital Rebel XTi. Due to long reach and awkward angle to reach the trigger button from the finger hole, I opted to not use the designed finger hole and just squeeze down on the normal plastic. Additionally I used a 82 mm fixed 20mm lens and it was too big for the lens area. Lastly any water or fog on the glass of the housing caused my photos to be really blurry or just bad. Overall this may be a good product if used lightly once in a while, but I am disappointed. Customer Review: Ewa-marine Underwater AF SLR / Digital Camera Housing U-AXP Hated this product. Tried it first with snorkeling & the camera doesn't fit tight in the housing so it kept moving around & made it harder to take pictures. Customer Review: Even the AVI Video Clip function is impressive ! I have used Sea & Sea underwater cameras for many years. For the last 14 years I was using a S&S Motormarine II 35 mm. Thus the 860G is my first step into DIGITAL underwater photography. I was impressed. I prefer the 6.0 megapixel setting which is true imaging relative to the 6.2 MP sensors. Like many digital cameras this model offers higher Mexapixel settings (up to 8MP in this case) with Interpolation. Let me simply say here that I am NOT a fan of interpolation. Interpolation is a fancy way of saying a computer algorithm fills in the BLANK areas when making the expansion from 6 to 8 MP. Depending on the complexity of the picture, this may or may not end up with an accurate "guess" on the part of the software to fill in the void. Suffice it to say, a TRUE 6.0 MP image is better to my eye (and most others) than a 6.0MP image expanded upward to 8.0MP via software tricks. But 6.0 MP is virtually identical to 35mm for 6 X 8 prints. (the old rule of thumb for digital cameras is the MP equates to the smallest dimension of an equivalent 35 mm print quality wise). Thus to be roughly equivalent to a 35 mm print, 3MP = 3X5 4MP = 4X6 6MP = 6X8 8MP = 8X10, etc.... What really surprised me was the quality of the AVI video clip mode. I rarely use the video mode on most digital "still" cameras because quite honestly they are usually pretty crappy............ but the S&S 860G has a very good 24fps AVI Video Recorder Mode with 320X240 and 640X480 resolution meaning you can pretty much get Super 8mm quality video footage underwater too ! What a bonus. I filmed 12 minutes of video and edited it using Magix Movie Edit Pro 11 and some family thought it was a travel or documentary video rented from Blockbuster intended to introduce people to SCUBA diving. It was that good ! Expect about 30 minutes of video @ 640X480 and 90 minutes of video @ 320X240 using a 2.0 GB storage card. If I had one minor complaint it would be that the camera's captured images tend to be a bit heavy on GREEN tint regardless of customized RGB settings or other customizations of white balance, exposure, effects, ISO, etc... This excess GREEN seems to occur under all light conditions (natural unlighted -or remote strobe, etc...) Since this is a digital camera I only view this as a minor complaint since 99.9% of people using digital equipment will transfer pictures to PC for "tweaking" and optimizing prior to making prints anyway. I have used Paint Shop Pro 6.0 for many, many years for photo retouching and with the 860G,I tend to find myself adding a bit of red, subtracting some green, lowering the gamma and giving the contrast a slight boost for most prints. I find myself now using the camera almost 50/50..... meaning I shoot almost as much video with it as I do still pictures. Note: If one was going to produce or release real underwater videos, then they would need to get a true underwater video setup and do it right....... but for simply capturing a pleasure dive to show friends or family that may not be divers themselves, the 860G is a great piece of equipment! |

Soon after the camera was off the manufactures' warranty, water got into the seals of the camera, and the camera started malfunctioning. SeaLife could not do anything about, but to offer a $[...] rebate, if I bought another SeaLife. I got really upset because the camera could not even go for repair. Check SeaLife's website and you see they offer rebates on any SeaLife camera on a trade-up, working OR NOT. I spoke to the representative, and said the camera was an expensive disposable, she did not disagree with me. I would never recommend a SeaLife. Customer Review: Housing is Touchy I bought the camera and flash kit together. The first time I used the camera, the housing got a tiny bit of water in it (a few drops) but it was salt water and the camera was fried. SeaLife replaced both the housing and the camera (their service department is great!). The first time I went to use it on a recent trip, the housing leaked in the rinse tank. The dive shop owner was there and I asked him to open it with me. Neither of us saw anything wrong with the O-ring. Camera recovered since it wasn't on and it was fresh water. I used both the camera and housing the rest of the week. I've had housed cameras for over 20 years and this is the only one that has leaked on me so I do know how to prep a housing for diving. A fellow diver who is also very careful with the O-ring had a similar problem with his DC-800 - random leakage with no apparent O-ring issue. It appears that the housing is very sensitive and I keep hoping that it won't leak again. It takes good pictures underwater and I've had it down to just over 100 fsw. so I can recommend it. You just have to be very careful in sealing up the housing. One suggestion the service tech had was to squeeze the housing shut and not depend just on the latch to seat the O-ring. |

Fortunately, my camera was insured, but sure enough, one of the overpriced o-rings in this camera came completely out at the corner, flooding the housing COMPLETELY full of water. This was a year ago. I switched to Ikelite's housing for the 5060/7070 and have had NO troubles, and the customer service is far preferable to Olympus'. The Ike housings are more expensive, but not as expensive as having to replace a camera! |

I wanted to get something that would keep my SLR from getting wet while I kayaked - I won't be doing any scuba diving. The bag fits many different size SLR cameras including the Fujifilm S2. It's big enough to cover an attached flash. The lens fits in a place where the bag can expand which is nice if you're using a lens that sticks out about 5 or so inches. There is no practical way to get to the lens while it's in the bag, so zooms may be a little tricky to work with. There is an indented place to put your finger to get to the button. The bag is pretty thick so manipulating switches on your camera is a little difficult. It's a pretty big bag, but I think it will serve my needs well. |

The Nikon camera when inserted is very difficult to use, the camera buttons are to close to the hard sealing trim to get to , but the case dose make great waterproof travel case. Customer Review: Great for the price...not perfect overall Bought it for a Costa Rican vacation. I chose this over a newer waterproof point and shoot because of the price. It worked well, although the lens cover is plastic and upon inspection that is noticable in pictures. The other downside is that camera buttons and switches are difficult to use. Knobs/ wheels are impossible. More than once, I got in the water and realized I was on movie mode, not auto. Once in the water its impossible to open it up without exposing the camera to water. The upsides are many, begining with the price...about 10% of an underwater camera. It also offers great protection against drops. I would not have a problem recommending it to anyone. - very good product |

I practiced with the camera in the case before the actual snorkeling day, to get used to the feeling of turning camera on, zooming in and out, etc. I used this case for a Canon SD600; which happens to have an underwater mode setting on it. Customer Review: Perfect fit if you own a Canon Powershot A590 DicaPac listed the WP510 as being the appropriate size bag for the Powershot A590 but I was a little hesitant to take their word for it because other reviewers were saying this bag is really big and you will need to pad the bag to keep the camera from moving around. I took a risk and bought the WP510 because I needed it for a water park party my daughters were invited to in about a week (either I spend for a bag or a new camera.) When it arrived I was sure the bag was too big for my camera (why didn't I listen the reviewers!) The bag tested well when I ran the preliminary underwater test in my bathroom sink; no water seeped into the bag despite numerous dunks under water. I then put my A590 into the WP510. It takes a little finesse to carefully and gingerly slide the camera into the bag despite the bag being pretty big. The camera fit PERFECTLY into the WP510 once positioned properly. The lens casing did not intrude into any of my pictures and framing my pictures through the LCD screen was easily done (if you have a camera with a viewfinder - very hard to find these days - the lens casing of the WP 510 does obstruct your view but isn't seen in the actual picture itself.) The WP510 although appears large is really not large at all because after you finish folding and sealing your camera in it, much of the sense of "bigness" is gone. I did not have to pad my camera in the bag to keep it from moving around because the bag actually sticks to the camera preventing it from moving around. During the water park party I had the camera hung around my neck and was chasing my two daughters around and was getting hit by water cannons and water falls and the camera never moved from its initial position and water never entered the bag despite over three hours of water time. Be sure to put a silica packet into the bag with your camera to prevent condensation from forming inside of the camera bag. This product is sturdy and very well made and much cheaper than spending $300 for an underwater camera. My only dissatisfaction with this product is if you own a camera with wheel controls if is very difficult to spin the wheel to the appropriate setting ie. from camera mode to movie mode. This is due to the stickiness and density of the WP 510. Pick a setting on the camera and stick with it. Pushing the camera buttons is easy to do. The photos came out pretty good although I did touch them up a bit in Photoshop with some minor levels/color adjustments. You can take video too and the sound is not muffled at all surprisingly. The lens area didn't fit snug around the base of the camera lens but I didn't have any problems with the black shadow some others here have had. No water leaked in at all. For 30 bucks this is great and I'm glad I found it. Much better than a disposable camera, an expensive underwater camera, or a more expensive underwater hard body. |

We bought this camera housing for a vacation to Florida, and it worked like a charm. Set up is very easy - you apply some of the provided silicone gel to the rubber seal (as you would with any other underwater camera housing), and other than that, you simply stick the camera in and close it. The housing has buttons to allow you to use all the functions of the camera - power, zoom, camera settings, menus, etc, etc. We had a full day of swimming/snorkeling in both fresh and saltwater environments, and the pictures turned out great without a drop of water inside the camera housing. Definitely recommend. Customer Review: Looks to be exactly what it claims. Since the A650 is not being made anymore I wanted to get the underwater housing before it too disappeared. Have not had an opportunity to go diving with it yet (and that's why 4 stars instead of 5, I can't rate it's deep water abilities) but put the camera in it and took several photos (dry land, not underwater) to test the ability to access all the functions (buttons, zoom, on/off, etc...). No problems at all. Can apparently do everything you would normally do. Looks and feels like it's well made. Looking at the photos you can not tell that the camera was in the case when they were taken. Now if you let the glass of the underwater housing get foggy or smeared, obviously the photos will suffer. Protection from dust, rain, excessive humidity, etc.... I'm pleased with it. |

The photo quality is what is to be expected being a 100$ camera, however it does take wonderful beach pictures. I was leary about putting it underwater but I did for short spurts and has no fear of it getting splashes of water on it. it's definately better than always buying a throw away waterproof camera, more convenient with the SD card and can take videos. How To Make Low Cost Underwater Camera Housings & Bags  Hello Everybody.
Thanks for taking the time to read my ad. I make and sell a very popular underwater video camera housing I designed called the Nemo 200. The Nemo is ideal for recreational scuba divers that need to take video cameras below to 120 feet and be used in a tough marine environment. In the last few years I have been repeatedly asked if I could come up with a much smaller and cheaper design for those people that are not scuba divers but merely wanted to protect their cameras and video cameras while they were surfing or fishing or snorkeling. A lot of charter boat captains want a housing to video their fish as they are brought to the boat and kite boarders and surfers and kayak owners wanted something cheap that would work with their cameras. Over the last two years I have come up with three designs that can be made to fit nearly any small to medium sized camera or video camera. These designs can all be made for less than $15-$20 and should not take much more than an hour or two and they have all been tested to at least 12 feet with no problems. Each design uses off the shelf items. If the housing or bag design shown in the video is too small for your camera all three designs can be made larger by using a larger container or bag which is readily available. The designs are quite simple and once you watch the construction you will see they make a lot of sense. However, some of the assembly methods used were not simple to come up with and took a lot of time to discover on my own. I think you will save a lot of time watching my video, and if you decide to build your own camera housing you will be very happy you did. Some of the most fun times of my life have been out on the water. I am guessing you feel the same way. Cameras hate water. Here are three ways to get your camera to like the water and to bring home a lot of great memories on film and video. My Three Housing designs Snorkelbox The Snorkelbox design has a manual control so you can turn your video camera on and off while it is inside the housing. The Nemo Jr The Nemo Jr is a waterproof bag with a lens that will fit many small to medium sized digital cameras and goes to 12 feet. Costs less than $15 to make and the size can be adjusted by using different sized bags. The Brownie The Brownie is probably the world's easiest and least expensive video camera housing to make. The containers come in many sizes. This design has gone repeatedly to 12 feet and never gave me any problems. I added a small mirror to the outside to help the user see what they are filming by the reflections from their open lcd screeen on the side. There is a nice handle on the other side to help you steady the camera while filming. On the 8th day, I noticed some drops of water on the inside of the case during a dive. I brought it up and took it straight to the dive table to dry and open it. I found 4 drops of water on the inside and a fine mist. I thoroughly dried and cleaned it and put it in a tank of water without the camera and found that it again had a few drops of water inside. So I discontinued the use during the rest of my dive trip. I got home today and called Canon and was told there is no warranty. They did finally tell me to mail it in to them and they would take a look at it, but may not be able to do anything about it. They also told me that no one has ever had a problem with this case, but as I looked on this page, I noticed there are others with problems and they have also called them in. So my faith in Canon products went downhill quickly. I had never had a Canon but after many recommendations decided to try this product and may truly regret it now. |

Customer Review: Worked Great for Snorkeling & Beach I purchased the DiCAPac 310 to use with my Canon SD850is. I used the product on the beach and on three different snorkeling trips while on a Western Caribbean Cruise. Before leaving home, I tested the pack in the kitchen sink with a paper towel inside to start with, rather than my camera. Worked great, so tested with the camera. I always triple checked the ziplock type seal and the velcro seals before each use. Never had a drop of water inside! The side dial on my camera was difficult to switch once in the pack, so I usually left it on automatic, although I did change to video mode a couple of times. As some people stated, if not holding the camera just right, there were about 3 shots of my 75-100 that had a black ring on. Just getting used to it helped a lot. Zooming was a little difficult at first, but got easier the more experienced I became. The directions that come with the DiCAPac aren't the clearest, but I figured them out. I didn't need the extender ring (that is supplied) for use with my camera. Someone else on one of our snorkel excursions commented that they wished they had gotten a pack like ours as theirs didn't have a dedicated spot for the lens to zoom out, so he was having trouble with that on his flat bag. For $25 this was a great product for what I wanted it for. I never went down more than 8-10 feet, so well within the suggested safe range. I would highly recommend this product. Just always double or triple check your seals before jumping in. Customer Review: The case seems fine BUT the User Manual ... I have not gotten the case wet yet so I can not speak about the handiness or picture quality or waterproofness of the case. I can see that the picture can have a black ring if the camera is not resonable centered, since there is nothing to keep the camera centered this will have to be watched. The "Directions and Cautions" take me back 30 or 40 years when instructions for any item made in Japan or China were allways a hoot and barely comprehesible. I get the gerneral jest of the instructions but there are a few missing details: What is the "UP-RING" for and how does one use it? The instructions start with: "notes) This Product desires that stick out of lens uses electively to only long some didgital camera that Dicapac hard packing lenght." Please if any one can decifer this I sure would like to know what it says and if I need to use the "UP-RING". How does one use the lanyard, it is totally un-intuitive. I am a very mechinical kind of guy and I haven't the slightest I dear how to hitch up the lanyard to the case. It does appear to be rather short so I will probable use a old landyard with a clip. Well I am heading for a Caribean cruise and some snorkelling hope fully I will get some great phots. |

Customer Review: Great for what it is Used the camera for the first time while snorkeling around Maui. The weather was marginal, (cloudy with occasional sunshine), for taking underwater pictures but the camera performed relatively well. Stills are not the best but the videos were better than expected. I believe the cloudy day had a lot to do with the quality of the stills and with a bit more sun I believe the stills would be a lot better. The mask fit well and you don't really notice the weight when you are in the water. I liked the ability to switch from still to video but wish the indicator lights (Red for stills and Blue for video) were more visible under water. You have to remember which mode you are in or you may not get what you want if you push the buttons and forget. All in all I feel this is a good purchase for the $$ spent and I'm looking forward to purchasing the newest model (good to a depth of 130ft) for my next Scuba diving adventure. Customer Review: Great Idea, Terrible Product This seems like such a great idea, doesn't it? Unfortunately it takes terrible photos in all levels of light. You take cool pictures (you think), get back home to download the photos, and there is nothing there, just black screen after black screen. And if you buy it from adorama cameras, good luck returning it. You're going to hear about their 14 day return policy which they apply to you even for broken defective merchandize. No water got in the camera and the pictures and videos I took came out great. I was using a Cannon A series. The only problem is that the pictures sometimes have a halo around them due to the camera lens not being flush against the lens opening of the camera pack. In addition, I could not figure out how to attach the zoom ring with the given directions. Despite these two drawbacks, I did like the product. Everyone wanted to know where I got it. I really liked the strap that comes with the product. This allows you to put the camera around your neck and forget about it. Customer Review: Purchase as a last resort. When this product first arrived, I thought it appeared to be little more than a glorified ziplock bag. I did the standard test for leaks, then started using it. The first thing I noticed was that my Canon PowerShot A620 barely fit through the opening, making me nervous the plastic would tear. The next dilemma was that the buttons were difficult to push and the zoom virtually unusable. This turned out to not be an issue since when I finally did get the zoom dial to work, the lens hit the front of the bag, and malfunctioned. Okay, once I finished the learning curve, I finally took it out to the ocean and began using it. It worked fine through the summer, and I have some exciting pictures from it. Eventually though, on the fifth use, I noticed small bubbles coming out near where you fold the opening over a few times. Perhaps I was just unlucky, but the seal where the plastic had been joined had sprung a leak. My camera was exposed to the salt water as I made my way back, and I had to do some corrosion cleaning. Upon closer investigation I was lucky. It seems the hole was a product of how the opening is wrapped around, and how close the seam is to this twisting. I can't figure any other reason for the hole to be there, and right where two pieces of plastic had been fused together. So, the bag worked fine for me a total of five trips before it leaked. To the credit of this review, I was being very careful with the bag, and the leak happened in a spot that seemed easy to identify what had happened. I'm giving the product 2 stars given the cheap price, and the possibility I just had some bad luck. However, I still rate it poorly as a last resort type option because had the hole not opened here, there still seems like there are a few other places on this product that may be prone to a similar problem. Customer Review: Some nice underwater features but color software needs improvement For a trip to the Yucatan, I purchased the SeaLife DC1000 with single flash unit, as we anticipated diving, and also a Canon D10 to allow more options while snorkeling. The DC1000 has some nice features (push-button controls are generally easy to use underwater) and comes at a reasonable price for a dive-capable camera for those of us that have limited chances to do photography with scuba. In general, the camera worked well and took some nice pictures while diving at 50 feet using the flash, which is essential under these conditions. As noted by the prior review, however, its performance for shallow-water snorkeling could have been substantially better. I initially had problems with the flash under these conditions, which frequently overwhelmed the image. After regular adjustment of the power, flash pictures worked better, but this means that one-chance shots (e.g., fish) may be lost. There are other adjustment options for the flash (macro vs. long-distance settings) that I did not have a chance to try, which may improve results, but the amount of adjusting to get a good flash result is frustrating given that the flash is supposed to be integrated into the camera system. Because of the erratic flash results I was getting, I also explored alternative non-flash modes. This revealed the biggest negative of the camera--the "special" underwater color bias settings seem to function by just adding varying levels of red to everything, whether the objects are red or not. After it became obvious that the underwater settings were generating unacceptable results, I started instead taking pictures underwater with the land setting, which of course creates images that are more blue than natural due to long-wavelength light attenuation. After returning home, I explored whether I could salvage some of the images using Photoshop. This helped to a limited extent for the shots taken in the underwater setting, but the excess red could not be entirely eliminated. In contrast, when color balance/contrast filtering was applied to shots taken with the standard land setting, the resulting image colors were excellent and true to life. So in the end, the special underwater adjustment features seem more of a sales gimmick that will send unsuspecting users astray rather than a strong selling point. In the future, SeaLife should consider teaming up with Adobe to come up with a quality image filter algorithm. An option that I did not try was to manually set the white balance using the included white board (another thing to hold onto in the water...)--this might fix the problem. Other negatives to the camera were an annoying delayed response when trying to change zoom settings, and a very slow focus/shutter response resulting in missed pictures. As I used the camera more, it seemed to me that the photo was taken when I released the button rather than when I initially depressed it as one would expect in other cameras. So how did it compare to the Canon D10 performance? Without the fancy underwater settings, the Canon took expected blue-biased photos that, when filtered through the contrast/color balance filters of Photoshop produced excellent, vivid, true to life shots. In general, the image sharpness of the D10 was slightly better than the DS1000, as perhaps might be expected when using a product from a top-tier camera company. Bottom line: if you are just going to snorkel during the day, go with the Canon D10 and save yourself a good chunk of money. If you are planning to dive or night snorkel, then the DS1000 may be the way to go, but expect to experiment/practice with the equipment before you get consistent results. Customer Review: with some experimentation a great camera,requires patience this camera has great potential, BUT not for snorkeling in under 15 feet. Buy one of those cheap ones for that. The color adjustor for the DC1000 is overkill for blue (Hawaiian, Caribbean) water and most pics are very orange! I had to use the LAND setting to avoid that problem, then adjust the exposure based on the depth and sunlight. ALOT of practice is needed for this. Fortunatley I had over a week in Hawaii! Diving over 15 feet however, is another story. The colors are much more true and vibrant and with good light the built in flash is often unnecessary. Key to good closeups is stillness. Hold on to something stable if possible, if there is a current or surge, you will get blurry pics. The stabilizer built in does not work all that well. Longer distances do not require this of course. There is a delay sadly, between pressing the shutter button and the actual snapshot. Not long, but long enough for MANY fish to hightail it out of the shot! Plan ahead of time or hide and pre focus the shot. That helps a lot. THe on land feature for this camera was good, not great. THe housing is great, very durable and solid, I had no fear of it breaking. You do need a good landyard with it though, however when I let go of it diving, it seemed rather neutral buoyant to me. It didn't shoot to the surface or sink to the bottom. A good thing! I give this camera 4 out of 5 stars because I like it's durability (housing) and deeper water quality. It is easy to use BUT don't expect instant award winning photos until you have played with the settings for a few snorkeling and dive trips. One thing I would like to see improved is a lens cover strap to hold it on the camera while not in use. Not sure if it has a place for that to buy one. This beats a film camera any day and for those who will use it more than 2-3 times, you will enjoy this one! I recommend getting at least a 4gb or 2 of them in order to practice and delete. I used a 2gb card up fast. |

The 2009 Report on Underwater Digital Cameras: World Market Segmentation by City  This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "underwater digital cameras" for the year 2009.
